Includes guided listening and video presentations to show the evolution of Rock from its roots to current stylistic trends. (CSU, UC) Units 3 Lecture-Discussion 54 Laboratory By Arrangement Contact Hours 54 Outside of Class Hours Course Student Learning Outcomes Evaluate the socio-economic factors and music history that contributed to the creation and development of Rock and Roll in the United States in the 20th century. Analyze the influences of social, political, ethnic, and gender issues on Rock and Roll and Rock and Roll's influence on those issues. Identify and distinguish the influence of the world cultures (i.e., Britain, Africa, Middle East, the Caribbean, and Central and South America) on Rock and Roll and how Rock and Roll influence music in those cultures. Course Content Outline I. Introduction to elements of music. Listening styles: Sound, rhythm, harmony, melody, scales, texture (homophony, heterophony, polyphony) traditional instruments used in Rock and Roll. The influences of the Blues, R & B, and racism. II. The history and influences of Rockabilly and the impact and history of Elvis Presley III. The Teen Market: Alan Freed and Dick Clark, American Bandstand, Girl Groups IV. The Surf Sound: The Beach Boys and the New American Empire V. The British Invasion: The Beatles, the Stones VI. The Beatles evolve (Sgt. Pepper) VII. The Folk Revival: Dylan and Civil Rights, Native American and Mexican Folk Singers VIII. Motown and Civil Rights IX. Acid Rock, the San Francisco sound, the hippie culture, Mod influences. X. Black Soul Music and the White American counterpart XI. Campus unrest: Psychedelic Music, Heavy Metal, Woodstock, East Indian influences (George Harrison, Ravi Shankar) XII. The 70's: Sweet Soul, Classic Rock, Country, Folk, Disco, the Jazz/Brass Bands (Chicago, Blood,Sweat, and Tears) XIII. Punk Rock and independent labels, New Wave, the Jamaican connection: Reggae and Ska XIV. MTV and Michael Jackson ("Thriller") XV. Springsteen, the compact disc, U2, Ireland Bloody Sunday XVI. Generation X: Hardcore to Grunge, the Rave Revolution: House and Techno XVII. The 21st Century: Latin and Tejano, Hip Hop. Course Objectives Course Objectives 1. Define and apply techniques of analytical listening with musical examples; 2. Assess national and international historical events of the past five decades and the influence of these events on the Rock and Roll idiom; 3. Analyze the influences of social, political, ethnic, and gender issues on Rock and Roll; 4. Recognize and distinguish the influence of the world cultures (i.e., England, Africa, Ireland, Middle East, South America, Mexico) on Rock and Roll; and 5. Compare and contrast substyles of the Rock and Roll genre. Methods of Evaluation Classroom Discussions Essay Examinations Objective Examinations Projects Reading Assignments 1. Read text on the surf sound and be prepared to discuss in class. 2. Research historical relevant material from library (magazine articles, books, etc.). Example: History of Woodstock and be prepared to discuss in class. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Submit a written assignment answering a relevant question from the instructor, such as on the surf sound. 2. Participate in classroom discussions concerning the social and historical relevance of the lecture and presentation material.
